DIAL is committed to minimizing waste and promoting recycling, with a goal of achieving zero waste to landfill through a circular economy approach. Airports face unique challenges in managing diverse waste streams, prioritizing waste reduction in line with legal regulations.
Waste Segregation at Source
DIAL has installed two bin system across the entire Delhi Airport infrastructure for ensuring source segregation of waste. DIAL has also implemented four bin systems in key locations to further promote source segregation of waste into different streams such as – paper, plastic, glass/cans and food waste. The segregation of waste is also promoted through creation of awareness and training.
Waste to Wealth Program
As part of DIAL’s “waste to wealth” program, an Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre (ISWMC) comprising of Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Biogas Plant and waste grass to palletization facility within the Airport premises has been operationalised. The waste generated within the Airport is collected and transported to the ISWMC. All the dry waste will be further segregated into various streams and handed over to authorized recyclers. The wet waste will be converted into biogas in digesters. The initiative helps in ensuring maximum diversion of waste from landfill to avoid environmental damage.
Single Use Plastic Free Airport
As part of its sustainability efforts, DIAL has implemented measures to eliminate single-use plastics, promote eco-friendly alternatives, and encourage waste reduction. The airport is focusing on reducing plastic consumption through initiatives like banning plastic items, providing reusable options, and raising awareness among passengers and stakeholders. This aligns with the airport's broader sustainability goals to reduce environmental impact and promote a circular economy.
Stakeholder engagement and training
DIAL places a strong emphasis on employee engagement and training in its waste management initiatives. DIAL ensures that all airport staff, contractors, and stakeholders are trained on proper waste segregation, recycling processes, and the importance of reducing environmental impact. Regular workshops, awareness campaigns, and training sessions are conducted to equip employees with the knowledge and skills needed to manage waste effectively. initiatives are in place to promote and waste to wealth programs.
